Reading is located at the confluence of the River Thames and River Kennet, and on both the Great Western Main Line railway and the M4 motorway, some 40 miles (64 km) west of London.
By the time of its 1086 Domesday Book listing, Reading had a population of 600; by 2008 this had grown to 145,700.
Every year Reading hosts the Reading Festival which has been running since 1971. The festival takes place on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday of the August bank holiday.
Mike Oldfield of Tubular Bells fame was born in Reading.
